As the home-shopping network Tiny House Nation says, "Why buy a house if you can live in one?"

That idea is why more people are selling their homes in favor of living in tiny houses. They're turning to making money from home to pay for these mini houses and save up for a bigger house.

"I took a look at the numbers," Nicole Bryant, the mother of two daughters, told CNBC. "We were paying $900 a month for rent and just had the girls in day care and I wanted to get back into my own business again and grow my business."

Bryant is living in a tiny house in her mother's backyard. Her days consist of listing items on eBay, taking care of the house and finding ways to make money.

"I didn't think I'd be going full time from home selling things, it was a hobby," Bryant said.

Some ideas are to sell products on Etsy or Craigslist, or to take on more clients who work from home, or to sell items on your own e-commerce site.

"If you love what you do, you'll figure out a way to make it work," Bryant said.

She's not the only one turning to making money from home. Here are some ideas that can help you make a little extra money without selling your home.

Make something with your kids

Kinsley Carsey, a mother of two daughters and a working mom to a full-time job, made $4,000 per month doing bookkeeping. The company she worked for allowed her to work from home, so she could stay with her daughters while she was working.

"I get so many calls with people with financial crises," Carsey told The Bump. "It feels good to help them through those tough times."

Those jobs have been an advantage for her family, because when her husband is out of town, or working late, she can help take care of the children and work at the same time.

Learn new skills

In addition to cleaning your home to make extra money, you could learn a new skill, like writing a book or taking a baking class.

Sheree Gladden from Independence, Missouri, did a lot of volunteering work for the non-profit where she was working, and decided to become an independent writing coach. She makes between $150 and $300 per hour to work one-on-one. She says she doesn't view her job as work.

"When I started it was a hobby, and then it turned into a passion and then it turned into a full-time job," Gladden told INSIDER.
